Can this UNKNOWN BURNT Colecovision Game Cartridge be Saved? Fire Damaged #80s #retrogaming #repair
*** This video is kindly supported by www.PCBWay.com - My choice for for high quality PCB manufacturing, 3D printing and more! I thank them, and Elaine Hu for their wonderful support! ***
In this video we take on the daunting challenge of salvaging a severely damaged ColecoVision game cartridge. The poor thing was subjected to extreme heat, leaving it melted and burnt beyond recognition. Therefore We have no idea what the game is unless we can get it working!
Starting by breaking open the cartridge we I manage to clean off the melted plastic and charred residue. After painstakingly preparing the contacts, I feel a surge of excitement as I prepare to test the cartridge PCB in my grotty ColecoVision console.
But alas, just when success seems within reach, disaster strikes!
Join me on this rollercoaster of emotions as I experience the highs of progress and the lows of defeat. Sometimes, even the best-laid plans can go awry, teaching us valuable lessons along the way.

    Weird isopropyl rubbing alcohol is $1 or $2 here in the US. That is 70% but good enough for about anything l. Can find 91% under $5 too. 99% shouldn't really be needed i think.

    Here's a tip; instead of removing those DE9 support thingies (thanks for that no-nonsense explanation BTW.), just shake your head a bit and hope for some of those really flat-headed screws in the correct size to fall out. There's really no need to remove those support thingies or gluing anything. I really hate glue, because I somehow always manage to get it everywhere else than where I want it to go. I have also had to resort to buying assortment boxes of all kinds of screws, since I've used that head shaking lifehack so much by now, that all that now drops out are the remaining load-baring 9" nails. 😅

    Mark here's a challenge for you, should you choose to accept it. Some Sega Master System games were released in Japan (for the Sega Mk III) bundled with and/or requiring a paddle controller, but these are now annoyingly expensive, and as far as I know there has never been a third-party option. So I was wondering if it would be possible to convert a 2600 paddle? One potential issue is the Sega having two independent fire buttons, so may need two donor controllers (and some dremel action).

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff 4 дні тому

      Probably be easier to just make a new one. Paddles aren't very complex and are often just a potentiometer and a few over onit components. I really want to build a Colecovision arcade stick first though. EDIT: The paddle project has been done already - www.raphnet.net/electronique/sms_paddle/index_en.php

    Hi Mark. Q1. What chip tester do you suggest? Q2. At 8:47, you suggest it is difficult filming around a camera. Is there another way around this? /s

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff 4 дні тому

      Hey Kris!! For logic you can use most EPROM burners to test the truth tables. I use an older TL866II knock off. Regarding the filming, it’s the tripod that gets in the way. There are some solutions, such as an overhead weighted boom (expensive and bulky) or a ceiling mounted arm (not possible in this room). It’s not a terrible problem but can mean that some issues I don’t see in real life show up in the footage.

    Instead of IPA, a good idea would be to use acetone. That would remove ABS soot. But depending on how damaged the pcb is... it might make the damage worse if it soaks in and breaks up the resin in the pcb

    Isnt it Just a matter of using a dremmel or fine grinding pen to remover some material from the sides of the screw posts? Couple of MM either side should do the trick.

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff 5 днів тому

      No because even if you do that the pcb sits too high inside the standard case and won’t make contact with the slot on the console.

    Even though your cart was so badly damaged, I still could recognize the ribs around the bottom of the case that showed that it was an Activision cart before you revealed the board. I suppose my dislike of their shapes, as opposed to the shapes of actual Coleco carts had bothered me ever since I was 13 back in 1982 and would keep my games in a case. I' m glad to see you restoring these, and sorry for your losses and your families' losses back then in the fire. -Bob

    @Mark - You could just file the inner sides of the screw posts flat so the PCB would fit in between the two. It doesn't look like it would have taken much filing down as the PCB looked like it was already just squeezing in and the square tabs would have kept the PCB in place. Not sure why you didn't at least try that option.

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff 5 днів тому

      The pcb actually sits to too high in the cartridge as well, as in it’s nowhere near low enough for the contact fingers to insert into the cart slot on the console.
